“We’ve used US-based cloud storage providers for a long time, but they didn’t offer the sovereignty, resilience, or economic advantages that can be achieved with Cubbit. This has enabled us to generate 50% savings on previous costs for the equivalent configuration.”

Andrea Saglietti, Head of Innovation and Information Security at ASL CN1 Cuneo

Overview

Challenges

  • Avoid extra fees (egress, redundancy, API calls)
  • Comply with NIS2, GDPR, and data localisation laws
  • Protect from ransomware and disasters

Solution

3-2-1-1-0 backup rule with Veeam and Cubbit’s geo-distributed S3 cloud storage

Results

  • 50% cost savings vs. hyperscaler solutions
  • Compliance with NIS2, GDPR, and regional regulations
  • Ransomware and disaster resilience
  • Quick deployment and ease of use

ASL CN1 Cuneo is a healthcare company that manages services across 173 municipalities and employs over 3,500 staff members.

ASL CN1 Cuneo’s mission is to provide high-quality healthcare services. Yet, it must also responsibly manage limited resources while complying with all security and sovereignty standards. The rising extra fees and loss of control associated with hyperscaler services posed a significant challenge.

Challenge

Most of ASL CN1 Cuneo’s data is health-related and classified as critical by the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN). As a result, strict compliance with GDPR and NIS2 data sovereignty and security regulations — along with ACN certification, a mandatory requirement for the Italian public sector — is non-negotiable.

Before adopting Cubbit, ASL CN1 Cuneo evaluated multiple storage solutions. While hyperscaler services partially met their needs, escalating egress costs and API call fees drove up expenses.

On-premises storage promised greater control and compliance but came with steep upfront costs, high maintenance demands, and a heavy IT workload — challenges particularly burdensome for a public healthcare provider operating with limited staff and budget.

Solution

Since adopting Cubbit’s technology, ASL CN1 Cuneo has leveraged S3-compatible cloud object storage that meets both national and European sovereignty requirements, keeps data within Italian borders, and ensures full regulatory compliance.

With Cubbit’s fully managed object storage, ASL CN1 Cuneo benefits from fixed storage costs that include all core S3 APIs and geo-distribution capabilities, enabling a 50% reduction in storage expenses on its previous costs for equivalent configurations with hyperscalers — while simultaneously enhancing data resilience and security.

ASL CN1 Cuneo now stores all of its backup data on Cubbit as part of its 3-2-1-1-0 backup strategy orchestrated via Veeam, eliminating the extra costs typically associated with S3 storage, such as egress fees, API calls, deletion, and bucket replication fees.

Moreover, Cubbit’s DS3 solution helps mitigate the risk of GDPR and NIS2 non-compliance fines, which can reach up to €10M (~$10.5M) or 2% of global annual revenue, whichever is higher.

Result

Andrea Saglietti, Head of Innovation and Information Security at ASL CN1 Cuneo, concluded: "The speed of deployment and ease of use make Cubbit’s DS3 far more manageable than complex on-prem systems, while maintaining sovereignty and giving us full control over our data. Today, we have greater peace of mind knowing our data is stored securely, compliantly, and cost-effectively.”
